Utilities
Utilities
The Utilities sector comprises electricity and gas generation, distribution and supply to consumers, telecommunications, water, and sewerage.
In 2019/2020 there were more than 2,200 non-fatal injuries across the water supply; sewerage, waste management, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply industries in the UK alone which clearly demonstrates the threat to Utilities worker safety.

Injuries to workers by most common accident (2019/20):
- Slips, Trips and Falls 31%
- Lifting and Handling 25%
- Struck by Moving Object 11%
- Fall from Height 9%
Utilities workers frequently experience substantial risks due to the high hazard environments in which they operate, including working in confined spaces or at height, proximity to high voltage power lines, flammable gas, dust and fumes and stresses from the powered equipment used.
Additionally, the Utilities industry faces particular challenges from lone workers which form a high proportion of its workforce, an increased risk of musculoskeletal disorders resulting from an ageing workforce, and the widespread use of contractors to fill a labour shortage, which can result in inconsistent Health & Safety procedures and lines of responsibility.
